DEEP PURPLE Project
DEEP PURPLE: Conversion of diluted mixed urban bio-wastes into sustainable materials and products in flexible purple photobiorefineries.
DEEP PURPLE aims to transform diluted urban bio-wastes, including mixed waste streams, organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW), wastewater (WW) and sewage sludge (SS), into feedstock for bio-industry to obtain sustainable bio-products.
This revolutionary concept will be implemented in a novel Single-Site Multi-Platform Concept (Biomass, Cellulose and Biogas) to replace current polluting destructive practices with new value-added concepts.
Several high added value bio-products will be produced during the project:
- Cosmeceuticals products based on ectoine
- Biobased materials for packaging applications based on PHA and CNFs (cellulose nanofibrils) compounds
- Biobased polyesters for films applications
- Self-healing material for construction sector
- Slow-release Organic fertilizer

NaturePlast is the leader of Work Package 4: Industrial Application of Materials and Products.
NaturePlast is also leader of R&D operations for the formulation and compounds production based on the PHAs and CNFs produced by the Deep Purple pilot. Thanks to its expertise and dedicated equipments, NaturePlast will process and characterize the compounds based on PHAs and CNFs obtained from the biorefinery.
