{"id":6835,"date":"2024-11-06T14:02:35","date_gmt":"2024-11-06T13:02:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sc2leje1101.universe.wf\/environmental-benefits-of-bioplastics\/"},"modified":"2025-05-05T14:07:26","modified_gmt":"2025-05-05T12:07:26","slug":"environmental-benefits-of-bioplastics","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/natureplast.eu\/en\/bioplastics\/benefits\/environmental-benefits-of-bioplastics\/","title":{"rendered":"Environmental benefits of bioplastics"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns composition-diaporama-single-produit is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>  The main <strong>interest and advantage<\/strong> of using <strong>bioplastics<\/strong> is their ability to <strong>potentially improve<\/strong> a product&#8217;s <strong>environmental impact<\/strong> in a number of ways:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Recovery of waste or by-products.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Reducing greenhouse gas emissions;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Save fossil fuels;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Possibility of using a local resource;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Generally speaking, bioplastics help to improve the environmental impact of products in two ways:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The use of <a href=\"https:\/\/natureplast.eu\/en\/bioplastics\/origin-of-bio-based-plastics\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/natureplast.eu\/bioplastiques\/origine-des-plastiques-biosources\/\"><strong>renewable resources<\/strong><\/a> to manufacture monomers reduces the use of fossil fuels and greenhouse gas emissions;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Their biodegradable <a href=\"https:\/\/natureplast.eu\/en\/bioplastics\/end-of-life-bioplastics\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/natureplast.eu\/bioplastiques\/fin-de-vie-des-bioplastiques\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>biodegradable<\/strong><\/a> which offers an additional option for the end-of-life of products and reduces waste volumes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<p><strong>The environmental performance of bioplastics still needs to be validated by studies such as life cycle assessments (LCA).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<div id=\"valeurs\" class=\"wp-block-group bloc-valeurs has-background\" style=\"border-radius:40px;background-color:#ffffff\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns are-vertically-aligned-top is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-12a0b04b wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\" style=\"padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40)\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-top is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#000000\" class=\"has-inline-color\">The benefits of renewable resources and biodegradation<\/mark><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The economic development of industrialized countries has largely been based on the intensive exploitation of non-renewable resources. This decision-making tool <strong>identifies<\/strong>, <strong>quantifies <\/strong>and<strong>evaluates<\/strong> the environmental impact of all stages in a product&#8217;s life cycle, from raw material extraction to end-of-life. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>ISO 14040<\/strong> series of standards (external link ISO 14040) lists the best practices for carrying out an LCA, thus guaranteeing the robustness of the results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The use of <strong>plant-based bioplastics<\/strong> as a substitute for fossil-based polymers can often significantly reduce the carbon footprint of products, depending on the application. Generally speaking, these analyses demonstrate the good performance of biobased polymers in terms of<strong>greenhouse gas emissions<\/strong> and<strong>fossil fuel savings<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-top is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>There is still room for improvement in these areas compared to the current situation. Indeed, the biomass used up to now has been mainly &#8220;noble&#8221; and often from dedicated crops. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In some cases, by-products such as molasses from sugar cane are already used to produce biobased polymers (in this case, biobased PET).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The use of <strong>by-products<\/strong> and <strong>waste<\/strong> from different sectors is currently being investigated in numerous projects, both on a local scale ( <em><a href=\"https:\/\/natureplast.eu\/en\/projet\/coproplast\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/natureplast.eu\/projet\/coproplast\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">COPROPLAST<\/a><\/em>) and European (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.urbiofin.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>URBIOFIN<\/em><\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These developments are set for industrialization in the coming years, with the constant aim of promoting biomass recovery as part of <strong>an eco-design and circular economy approach.<\/strong> <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The main interest and advantage of using bioplastics is their ability to potentially improve a product&#8217;s environmental impact in a number of ways: Generally speaking, bioplastics help to improve the environmental impact of products in two ways: The environmental performance of bioplastics still needs to be validated by studies such as life cycle assessments (LCA).
