Plastic containing additives that promote its fragmentation when exposed to oxygen, heat, or light. This process results in the breakdown of the material into small fragments, but does not guarantee complete biodegradation by microorganisms, which distinguishes these materials from biodegradable plastics. Oxo-degradable additives are no longer permitted because they are not biodegradable and are therefore highly polluting.
