COPROPLAST: recycling of Normandy agricultural by-products/waste in the plastics industry

Objectives

The aim of the COPROPLAST project is to propose alternative solutions to the plastics industry, integrating local resources that are not in direct competition with food or feed.

In collaboration with the AGRIAL cooperative, it plans to study by-product deposits at local level (Normandy). These by-products/waste mainly come from agricultural (cereals) and agri-food (fruit and vegetables) activities.

The creation of a local synergy with a major player in its sector is very important, as is the resulting increased ability to control flows and supplies. These local resources will also make it possible to significantly improve the environmental performance of the products on offer, as will the use of polymer matrices that are also biosourced and, in some cases, biodegradable, depending on the application.

The recovery of co-products/waste involves a number of innovative preparation stages to make them suitable for use in the plastics industry, and blending to produce compounds ready for use by plastics manufacturers.

Applications range from food packaging to horticultural and agricultural products.

Natureplast intervention

NaturePlast initiated the COPROPLAST project and has been coordinating it since it began in 2015.

NaturePlast is in charge of defining compound formulations incorporating by-products, their production and validation, and their industrialization.
