NaturePlast is delighted to announce the launch of SATISPHACTION, a European collaborative project coordinated by AINIA, which aims to develop innovative processes for recycling and formulating PHA (polyhydroxyalkanoate).

To mark the official launch of this collaboration, the entire consortium met on 22 and 23 October 2025 at the AINIA premises in Valencia, Spain. This first meeting was rich in exchanges and laid the foundations for a promising project.

Clear objectives:

The aim of the project is to develop a new generation of high-performance PHA-based materials that are better integrated into a circular economy model for packaging applications. To achieve this, several areas of work have been defined:

  • The development of efficient recycling processes for PHA, both chemical and biological (using living cells), which reduce its production cost and environmental impact throughout its life cycle.
  • The preparation of PHA polymers with tailor-made properties, using artificial intelligence to guide the design of molecular structures and the development of new chemical polymerisation methods.
  • The creation of new formulations from recycled materials with a high PHA content, without harmful additives and incorporating thermosetting enzymes to accelerate self-degradation. These formulations will also be tested to confirm their total biodegradability and the absence of microplastic generation in terrestrial and marine ecosystems.
  • Validation of the feasibility of previous PHA formulations for food packaging through prototypes: thermoformed trays, flexible heat-sealable envelopes, biodegradable adhesives for labelling fruit and vegetables.

NaturePlast’s role: expertise in formulation

As part of this project, NaturePlast will be involved in the development and characterisation aspects. Our team will draw on its expertise to:

  • Developing custom compounds from PHA grades produced by project partners such as Polykey, AGENCE NATIONALE CONSEIL SUPÉRIEUR DE LA RECHERCHE SCIENTIFIQUE, and NOVA ID FCT.
  • Accurately characterise raw materials and final formulations in order to validate their properties (mechanical, thermal, etc.) and ensure their suitability for the targeted applications.

The SATISPHACTION project will run until 2029.
